Mnemonic storms of sound, text and image. A video project by canecapovolto.
Who are the people in the photo? Who took the picture? How did this image end up on a stall at the flea market? The old black-and-white photographs that any of us can buy reveal some things but hide many secrets. All you have to do is ask and wait, accept that they are looking into us. Inventing stories, fabricating, transforming every single photo into a video means having more time to delve into the narrative, more time to look and listen, and perhaps to embrace these memories as our own. And there is nothing romantic or nostalgic about this!
And finally, once again: “Nothing is true. Everything is permitted”.
SCUOLA FUORINORMA / AN OFF-THE-BEAT SCHOOL
Is an experimental educational project founded in Catania in 2016 with the aim of creating an experiential approach to teaching (in the sense that experimental practices can generate theories, rather than the other way round) focusing on video, sound and contemporary art.
In 2018, SFN created La scatola dei suoni (The Box of Sounds), an archive of sound recordings and field recordings which is also shared with sound artists.
SFN has curated some collective sound projects involving musicians and sound artists from all over the world:
Datapanic, Re-soundscape, Suono Madre (students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania took part in the latter two) and L’Elefante nella stanza (a collective podcast with seven authors on each volume).
SFN’s catalogue includes four seminars: Error! Machines That Dream and Other Stories (a history of the political use of technology), The Box of Sounds (on the use of sound, between entertainment and control), Images of Sound (moving images - soundtrack/sound design: a conflictual relationship), 25 Sounds and Their Stories (The mysteries of sound evocation in 25 episodes).

It all began one afternoon. I was in the same room as my mother. On the TV programme she was watching, the Rosary was being recited against a still image. Why could I do nothing but listen to that phrase repeating itself endlessly? Why
did the words drift further and further away, and all I could hear was their sound?
